Urology is an area of medicine that is focused on the urinary tract of men and woman and the reproductive system of men. There are several sub-disciplines of urology and the specialty often overlaps with other areas of medicine including oncology, gynecology and endocrinology. Urologists work with both medical and surgical issues related to the urinary tract and bladder.
Medical conditions that may be treated by urologists include erectile dysfunction, stress incontinence, kidney stones, urinary tract infections and prostate enlargement. There are a number of surgical procedures that surgical urologists perform, as well, including vasectomies and circumcisions. Urologists also work with patients who have had kidney transplants and gallstone removals, as well as less common procedures like ureteral stenting, da vinci prostatectomy or prostate enlargement treatment.
Florida urology centers are typically associated with the large hospital networks, such as Physicians Regional Medical Center, Lee Memorial Health System, Catholic Health East and the university hospitals. Not all may offer the same services, as some centers will be highly specialized or may be limited in what can be performed on site. Many urologists and urology centers focus specifically on treating and studying cancers associated with the urinary system, such as prostate cancer in men.
